I’m going on holiday to Hawaii with my husband and 4 year old son, and I want some advice on things to do which we would all enjoy. I’ve got some ideas from the tourism website, but I’d like some more please. I’m looking for a good mix of adult friendly, child friendly and scenery, to get as much as possible out of the trip. We’ll be based in Oahu. My husband and I would love to go snorkeling, would our son be able to be involved in that, or is he too young?
This is a great time to visit the Aloha State. Do rent a small car to get around to free activities. After the initial obligatory Waikiki beach, which is a nice swim, and snorkel for you and the son, go out to Hanauma Bay to the East. It is a fish sanctuary, and full of beautiful fish that will eat from your hands–bread tightly smashed in to a ball, or frozen peas from a local store. There is a slight charge to this one beach, but it is worth it.
Around the north shore, stop at Hukilau Beach, just down the road from the Polynesian Cultural Center (a rather pricey but enjoyable all day tourist attraction), ask the locals for directions. A beautiful beach, bring your own cooler with lunch. While down this way, Turtle Bay Hotel has a wonderful little beach open to visitors, friendly for four year olds.
While Luaus are expensive, in the $80 range, it is what Hawaii is in many minds. Save on not going on expensive tour buses. Pearl Harbor Tour is FREE, instead of paying $35 or more for a bus tour, take your car, and hint, go in the afternoon 2 pm or so.
Another wonderful beach is Koolina Beach, on the South West end. Parking is limited, so go early, but skip the West end, people can be crazy there and don’t understand tourism is what fuels many of our jobs in Hawaii. Just driving around the island, we have many beautiful and free beaches. Also Pineapple Plantation, Manoa Falls–short hike to falls. Shop at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Take a dinner cruise, paddle a canoe at Waikiki beach, surf board lesson–or just rent a board, same beach.
In the next few days I am posting a brand new website that will primarly feature photography of a particular Canadian province. My girlfriend and I are traveling to Hawaii in about a week. We’re staying on Oahu Island on Waikiki Beach. We’re not staying for long. What are some things you highly recommend? I love the Mai Tais at the Shorebird. They also have live music and a nice atmosphere.
Take a drive around the island, check out the insane surfers on the north shore at the world-famous surf spot Pipeline, visit the Byodo-In Temple (see link below), have a "shave ice" at Matsumoto’s, stop at a grocery store on the way and get some local food like saimin noodles, spam musubi or kahlua pork.
Try scuba diving! It’s amazing! Something like 1/3 of Hawaii’s underwater life isn’t found anywhere else in the world. Most dive shops will pick you up from your hotel. Jan/Feb is whale season so there’s a good chance you’ll see whales on the boat trip out (it’s like a 2-for-1 scuba and whale watching).
Delicious: malasadas (portuguese donuts) very addictive and a local favorite.

* If you want to hike to the top of Diamond Head, go early. Otherwise it’s hot and crowded.
* Same for the Arizona Memorial – get there when they open because about 45 minutes later dozens of tour buses will show up.

I work for a marketing firm who specializes in website that have been optimized for search engines. I am thinking of becoming an exclusive ’search engine optimizer’ but am wondering if this is too broad of a category. Can one specialize in this and make a decent living? It’s a possible career, but a very narrow area to look for a job. If you already have a job doing this and keep it, you can probably make a very good living, but I’d guess that isn’t what you are asking.
Working for a company that markets optimized search engines is very different from being the person, or a part of the group, that does the optimizing.
