I am considering a job in Hilo, Hawaii. I will be moving from a small town in Louisiana! I read a lot about Hilo; the rain, beaches, heat, etc .. I understood that Hilo is a small town. But some towns are more interesting than others. I am interested in social and professional activities. Can someone list examples of activities that residents do in Hilo other than going to the beach or visiting the volcano? Also, in one of the posts, I read than houses in Hilo are old and run down. Is this true? Are there modern Apartment complexes in Hilo or modern stores, et c…
Basically I wam trying to figure out whether Hilo, Hawaii is a small town just like any other small town on the mainland, or whether there is something special or unique at Hilo (Other than being a tourist destination).
Do you like the rain?
5-15 inches a month

Great place to visit though.
I’m going on holiday to Hawaii with my husband and 4 year old son, and I want some advice on things to do which we would all enjoy. I’ve got some ideas from the tourism website, but I’d like some more please. I’m looking for a good mix of adult friendly, child friendly and scenery, to get as much as possible out of the trip. We’ll be based in Oahu. My husband and I would love to go snorkeling, would our son be able to be involved in that, or is he too young?
This is a great time to visit the Aloha State. Do rent a small car to get around to free activities. After the initial obligatory Waikiki beach, which is a nice swim, and snorkel for you and the son, go out to Hanauma Bay to the East. It is a fish sanctuary, and full of beautiful fish that will eat from your hands–bread tightly smashed in to a ball, or frozen peas from a local store. There is a slight charge to this one beach, but it is worth it.
Around the north shore, stop at Hukilau Beach, just down the road from the Polynesian Cultural Center (a rather pricey but enjoyable all day tourist attraction), ask the locals for directions. A beautiful beach, bring your own cooler with lunch. While down this way, Turtle Bay Hotel has a wonderful little beach open to visitors, friendly for four year olds.
While Luaus are expensive, in the $80 range, it is what Hawaii is in many minds. Save on not going on expensive tour buses. Pearl Harbor Tour is FREE, instead of paying $35 or more for a bus tour, take your car, and hint, go in the afternoon 2 pm or so.
Another wonderful beach is Koolina Beach, on the South West end. Parking is limited, so go early, but skip the West end, people can be crazy there and don’t understand tourism is what fuels many of our jobs in Hawaii. Just driving around the island, we have many beautiful and free beaches. Also Pineapple Plantation, Manoa Falls–short hike to falls. Shop at Ala Moana Shopping Center. Take a dinner cruise, paddle a canoe at Waikiki beach, surf board lesson–or just rent a board, same beach.
Hey, I am considering moving to Honolulu, Hawaii in the near future..(moving from London), so pursue my career in the Travel and Tourism industry.
Is Honolulu, and the Hawaiian islands in general, an expensive place to live? and are flights from the mainland USA to the islands very expensive?
Thank you in advance!
Another point, is it expensive to travel from one island to another?
Thanks again
yes it is. naturally because it costs so much mroe money to ship everything out there… milk, food, gas etc
but definately worth it! watch for local surfers, dont act like the shit haha
take it easy man
I want to move to Hawaii, but I’m apprehensive about the job market due to the fact that I would be a newby without any insider’s knowledge. I can speak these three languages fluently and I would like to know what kinds of industries I may be able to get a job in. I was hoping that perhaps there would good opportunities in the hotel/tourism trade. I would appreciate anybody in the know to give me some tips about the Hawaiin job market. Thanks!
That is a skill few Americans have. I imagine you would have no problem finding a job in whatever you choose.
Phil has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world (boracay has been voted the most beautiful in the world for 5 yrs ) but almost no tourism when compared to many other places with FAR less to offer, like hawaii and mexico! And the people are so friendly as well. I wont even mention the beautiful women !! So why ??
Few reasons:
1. Lack of marketing. Hawaii and Mexico are heavily marketed (especially in the Bay Area where I am from). For further places, Thailand always comes up, again due to marketing. The only thing most people hear about the Philippines is the corruption, human rights issues, etc. Once people do come however, they often love it.
2. Lack of online presence. For most of my vacations I go online to virtualtourist or the like and start researching. When it comes to booking the trip, I often go to the hotel website. Here it is not that simple. Once must call (easy for me here in Manila but a pain for a foreigner outside the country) and rely on word of mouth. I am currently planning a weekend to Batangas and am having trouble finding information. For my multiple trips to Hawaii, I did everything online and had almost too much information.
3. Prices. Compared to other countries in the region, the Philippines (resort areas–El Nido, Coron, Pearl Farm, Boracay, Bohol) is not that cheap. Accommodations are much cheaper in Thailand, Vietnam, etc.
4. Lack of Government initiative. The WOW Philippines website is a great idea (even with that wretched music) but it is full of dead links and outdated information. There should also be explanations there for basic tourist questions (i.e., how do I get from International to Domestic terminals, best time of year to come, tipping practices, transportation options).
I personally belive that the Philippines has tons to offer tourists and with the correct sales & marketing could become a top tourist destination in SEA. Tourism would also help bring money INTO to country as well as create jobs so hopefully so many people would no be forced to work overseas.
Here is a beautiful destination for only $298 for the whole week. www.298Vacation.info
