I don’t get it honestly I mean EVERYONE goes to Hawaii and I just don’t see why it’s not even that great and yes I do know because I live here. I understand most people don’t have loads of money for these kinds of things but Hawaii isn’t really a cheap choice by any means either. I just wish MORE people would opt for a different location. I’m sure I will get grief for this one but I’m sure SOME of you can see what I mean???

Thats so true!! But…I have to admit, I have never been to Hawaii and my husband and I have no desire to go. We have talked about it, and we both think its probably over-rated.
Our image is that there are a lot of towering hotels, overcrowded beaches and cheesy tourist spots. Also I know a lot of tourists go there to shop because US prices are a bargain. Yes just what I want to do at the beach– shop! No.
We are going to Fiji for our summer vacation this year.

I dont know…some place tropical? Never been to Hawaii, like to some day. Personally I’m going to Meixco for my honeymoon. My FIL is giving us a week in Puerta Vallarta.

Are you bitter about too many tourists or something? Lots of places revolve around tourism, and if it supports your local economy, it’s a good thing. All the sales taxes paid by tourists go to the state so you don’t have to pay as much.

Plus, it’s a true getaway from the continental U.S. and the environment is unique as well.

If you live in New York, Maui is like heaven. When I stayed there for a week I wanted to move there.

I guess in your case, familiarity breeds contempt.

For newly married couples, though, the idea of uninhabited beaches, tropical flowers growing in the wild, warm weather, exotic foods, the road to Hana, the pools of Oheo, and the exotic nature of our 50th state are too hard to resist. The expense and the length of the flight make it the kind of destination that is hard to justify any other time than on the honeymoon, which might be the one vacation where cost isn’t a primary concern for many travelers.

Certainly Mexico and the Bahamas are affordable enough to be an ordinary vacation. Why waste your honeymoon on these places?

Also, at least in Maui, there aren’t a whole lot of screaming kids in the hotel so you can enjoy yourself without too many distractions.

I think Hawaii is a popular destination because it is tropical, beautiful, exotic, far away, but also within the United States so you don’t run into needing a passport to get there.
I think it is also popular for a honeymoon because alot of people take a honeymoon that is longer than the normal vacation they would take so it presents an opportunity to go farther as well as adjust to a different time zone.
At some time, I would like to visit Hawaii, but it is not going to be my honeymoon destination.

where do you see everyone suggesting hawaii?

i have seen, and suggested, the smokey mtns or gatlinburg tenn more than anything else.

more ppl seem to be suggesting mountains, cruises or all inclusive island vacas to the tropics not hawaii

it’s too expensive for my taste. my fiance would like to go back since he was stationed there for 4 years in the usmc but he’s not insistant on it

My personal opinion is Hawaii is overrated, and to damn expensive. Don’t get me wrong it’s beautiful, but I’d rather go to Rome or Germany. Being it’s a part of our heritage it would mean more to us. I would love to go to Fiji as well.

because it’s one of those super expensive places you never get to go to and it’s weather is incredible all year ’round.

I completely agree! I’ve never been but it seems like a very popular place to go. My guess is because you don’t need a passport and it’s "familiar" for Americans who don’t travel much. I also have the impression that it’s full of tourist traps, towering hotels and over-crowded beaches. That’s why my FH and I decided to go to Tahiti & Bora Bora for our honeymoon this fall. I read somewhere that there are more tourists in Hawaii in one day than Tahiti gets in an entire year. To each their own I guess.

The main thing about Hawaii is that it is far away (for most people, in the other 49 states) you have the ocean and beaches, and most importantly is you don’t need a passport!
